Our Curriculum

+ INTRODUCTION TO PARALEGAL STUDIES

This course will familiarize students with the concept and role of the paralegal, the geographic regions and organizational entities which utilize paralegals, and sources of case law and legislation which directly affect the paralegal.

No prerequisites.

+ PROFESSIONAL ETHICS

This course is designed to be a discussion of the Code of Ethics to which a paralegal must adhere, including typical problems which arise in the authorized and unauthorized practice of law.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Paralegal Studies

+ CRIMMINAL LAW

Students will become familiar with the basic purpose and intent of the New York State Penal and Criminal Procedure Law. Legal terms and definitions are explained to students so that they have a basic understanding of legal language.

Prerequisite: Professional Ethics

+ REAL ESTATE LAW

This course will enable the graduate to assist, under the supervision of a lawyer, in virtually all phases of real property transactions.

Prerequisite: Professional Ethics

+ MATRIMONIAL LAW

Students will learn how to assist a lawyer in the fact finding, interviewing, analysis and preparation of necessary pleadings and/or agreements in the area of marital relationships.

Prerequisite: Professional Ethics

+ LITIGATION AND TRIAL PREPARATION

Under the supervision and control of a lawyer, the graduate will be able to assist in the process of litigation. The functional skills acquired include preparing and maintaining files, gathering information through client interviews, drafting pleadings, organizing and indexing documents, tracing evidence, examining public records and preparing briefs and memoranda.

Prerequisite: Criminal Law, Real Estate Law & Matrimonial Law

+ BUSINESS ORGANIZATION

This course is designed to teach the graduate to help in the formation, daily administration and dissolution of a sole proprietorship, partnership and a corporate entity.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Paralegal Studies

+ PROBATE, ESTATES AND TRUSTS

This course will provide the necessary knowledge for the graduate to help plan and administer the desires of personal estates.

Prerequisite: Business Organizations

+ LEGAL RESEARCH

This course will familiarize the students with the procedures and tools utilized in conducting effective research for the legal community.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Paralegal Studies

+ LEXIS/NEXIS COMPUTER

This course will familiarize the student with the procedures utilized in computer-assisted research.

Prerequisite: Legal Research

+ NOTARY PUBLIC

This course provides the students with the requisite knowledge and law to take and pass the Notary Public test and to be commissioned a Notary Public in and for the State of New York.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Paralegal Studies

+ EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

This course will acquaint students with all the opportunities available to them in their search for employment.
